Methodology

Our credit cards team has spent hours analyzing hundreds of credit cards. We took a deep dive into the details of each product and that analysis, combined with our years of experience covering credit cards, informed us as we developed these credit card rankings.

When selecting the best Citi credit cards for this list, we curated the top cards in their respective categories (for example, best cash-back cards, best balance transfer cards, best 0% intro APR cards). Within those categories, we considered various attributes including:

  • Annual fees.
  • Rewards potential (if any).
  • Length of intro APR offers (if any).
  • Standout perks and benefits.
  • What made the card the best in its particular category.

Who should get a Citi credit card?

Citi offers an array of credit cards with features like competitive rewards and low introductory APR periods that can make them attractive for anyone looking to earn rewards on their spending or consolidate debt.

If you’re looking for a credit card with an introductory APR offer, Citi’s options are often lengthier than much of the competition, particularly when it comes to balance transfers. These offers can help you make headway on paying off a big purchase or paying down high-interest debt transferred from a non-Citi credit card, since your payments will go toward the principal debt without any being siphoned away to pay accumulating interest charges.

Depending on the type of card, customers may earn cash-back rewards or points when using their card. Citi’s ThankYou rewards can be used to purchase merchandise through partner retailers or redeemed directly via statement credits towards future expenses made with the same card. Cash back can be taken as a statement credit or as a deposit to a qualifying account.

Whether a Citi-issued card is right for you will depend on whether or not the specific benefits and terms of the card fit your spending habits and financial goals.

Considering a balance transfer but don’t know where to start? Here are the steps to do a balance transfer.

Guide to Citi credit cards

Evaluating reward potential

We evaluate the reward potential of travel rewards credit cards based on what we’d expect a household in the 50th percentile of wage earners to spend each year on a credit card. We gather these figures from the government and other publicly available data. In a year, we expect a household might make about $84,352 and spend about $25,087 of this on a credit card.

For a cardholder with the Citi Double Cash, which earns an unlimited 2% cash back on purchases — 1% when purchases are made and another 1% when they’re paid off, plus, for a limited time, 5% total cash back on hotel, car rentals and attractions booked on the Citi Travel℠ portal through 12/31/24, for instance, this could mean a little over $501 in cash-back rewards on everyday purchases.

Types of Citi credit cards

Citi offers a variety of credit cards to meet the needs of different types of consumers. The best Citi credit card for you will depend on your individual financial situation and goals.

Rewards cards offer points, miles or cash-back rewards for spending in certain categories such as gas stations, supermarkets and restaurants. This type of card is ideal if you want to earn rewards every time you use your card for purchases. Many rewards cards even come with additional perks such as travel insurance, purchase protection and extended warranties on eligible items.

Balance transfer credit cards are designed to help you pay off existing debt faster by offering an introductory 0% APR for a specified length on balance transfers made within the first few weeks after opening an account. Be sure to read all terms carefully before applying so that you understand any fees associated with balance transfers and how long the promotional interest rate period lasts — these can vary significantly from one card issuer to another.

Student credit cards are specifically designed for people who are enrolled in college or university programs full-time or part-time, and typically have lower credit limits than traditional credit cards. However, they have the major benefit of being accessible to applicants who have thin credit files or no prior credit history.

How to get a Citi credit card

There’s a few simple steps when it comes to applying for a Citi credit card.

  1. Narrow down which Citi credit card is a fit. The right card for you will be based on a combination of your spending patterns, credit standing and goals in acquiring a new card.
  2. Check your credit standing. Citi doesn’t offer a preapproval tool for any of its cards so it’s best to check your credit scores before applying for a new card to check if your scores are in the range needed to get the card. Having the right credit score, however, doesn’t mean you’ll be approved for the card — Citi will review a whole host of factors, including your income, as part of its approval decision.
  3. Submit your application. Like most issuers, you can apply for a card with Citi in several ways: online, over the phone or by mailing in an application. All of these methods will require information including your full name, Social Security number, date of birth and some basic financial information. Typically applying online can result in the fastest response.
