Bread Cashback American Express Review 2023: Unlimited 2% rewards, no redemption minimums

The Bread Cashback American Express card is a useful rewards credit card for cardholders who are on the go. It offers a flat cash-back rate of 2% per dollar spent on the card, anywhere in the world where AmEx is accepted.

As a cardholder, you can rack up as many reward points as you want since the program doesn’t impose an earning cap. Additionally, there’s no need to wait until you’ve earned “enough” rewards for redemption; you can redeem your earned rewards as a statement credit or cash-back direct deposit, starting with a penny.

Bread Cashback American Express is a good travel companion for those who frequently travel abroad. There are no foreign transaction fees imposed on international purchases, and cardholders receive select AmEx travel benefits. It also might be a good card if you enjoy getting first dibs on presale ticket access for concerts, shows, and other entertainment.

Although Bread Cashback American Express might be convenient for some, thanks to the simplicity of its flat rewards model and some basic travel benefits, the card is limited when it comes to redemption options, welcome bonus incentives, and its 20% dining discount or free appetizer only applies to a short list of participating restaurants.

Alternate cash-back credit cards

Bread Cashback American Express vs. Citi Double Cash Card

The no-annual-fee Citi Double Cash Card lets you earn up to 2% cash back on every purchase. When you spend on the card, you’ll earn 1% cash back, and then earn another 1% cash back when you pay for the purchase. Like the entertainment perk from Bread Cashback, Citi Double Cash gives cardholders special access to presale tickets.

Unlike the Bread Cashback card, the Citi Double Cash comes with a 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 18 months. Balance transfers must be completed within four months of account opening. After that, the standard variable APR will be 18.24% - 28.24%, based on creditworthiness. There is also an intro balance transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater, completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, the fee will be 5% of each transfer (minimum $5).

Bread Cashback American Express vs. Wells Fargo Active Cash Card

Wells Fargo Active Cash cardholders also earn an unlimited 2% cash back on purchases with no annual fee, but unlike Bread Cashback holders, receive ] a welcome bonus, too. The Wells Fargo Active Cash card currently offers $200 cash back when you make a minimum of $1,000 in new purchases within the first three months. Additionally, it comes with an introductory 0% APR on new purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months.  After, that your variable APR will be 19.24%, 24.24% or 29.24%. Balance transfers made within 120 days from account opening qualify for the intro rate and fee.

Bread Cashback American Express vs. Apple Card

The Apple Card marries tech with its rewards program. The card earns 3% back on everything bought from Apple and from participating partners like Uber, Walgreens and Nike, 2% back every time something is bought using Apple Pay and 1% on all other purchases. There’s no annual fee and you can purchase Apple products interest-free with a monthly payment plan using the card.

Should you get the Bread Cashback American Express?

When it comes to flat-rate cash-back rewards credit cards, Bread Cashback American Express admittedly offers a higher reward per dollar spent, compared to cards that only offer 1% or 1.5% cashback. However, as the cash-back rewards market continues to grow, Bread Cashback’s unlimited 2% cash-back feature has become more commonplace.

Overall, there aren’t necessarily any glaring red flags with the Bread Cashback American Express card, but it’s missing enticing benefits and features to help it stand out from the crowd.
