Navy Federal Visa Flagship Rewards drawbacks
Membership required: The credit union’s membership qualification can be prohibitive for those who don’t meet a membership category.
Annual fee: The $49 annual fee can be a deterrent for cardholders who don’t want to pay for the privilege of carrying the card.
Points aren’t transferable: If you earn rewards across multiple Navy Federal Rewards programs, you can’t combine your accrued points. You also can’t transfer your points to airline and hotel loyalty programs like some other travel cards allow.

The Bank of America Travel Rewards card rids you of the need to track bonus categories by letting you earn 1.5 points for every dollar spent. There’s no annual fee and it offers a welcome bonus of 25,000 points after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days. New cardholders can receive a 0% intro APR for the first 18 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made within the first 60 days of opening your account. After the intro APR offer ends, a variable APR of 17.74% to 27.74% will apply. A 3% fee ($10 minimum) applies to all balance transfers.
Those who are part of Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards program have even greater earning potential of 25% to 75% more rewards, depending on which tier they’re in.
Navy Federal Visa Flagship Rewards vs. Capital One VentureOne Rewards
The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Card lets you earn 5 miles per dollar spent on Capital One Travel bookings of hotels and rental cars. You can also earn 1.25 miles for each dollar spent on the card in other categories. There’s no annual fee, and new cardholders receive a welcome bonus offer of 20,000 miles after making at least $500 in purchases on the card within the first 90 days.
There’s an introductory APR offer, too of 0% for 15 months on purchases and balance transfers. A 17.99% - 27.99% variable APR applies after that. There’s a 3% balance transfer fee on amounts transferred within the first 15 months.
Finally, rewards earned with the VentureOne can be transferred to Capital One’s selection of more than 15 travel partners.
Navy Federal Visa Flagship Rewards vs. Citi Double Cash Card
If you don’t travel enough to take advantage of the Navy Federal Visa Flagship Rewards Card, and can’t justify the annual fee, a no-annual-fee cash-back card might be a better fit. Citi’s Double Cash Card lets you earn a net of 2% cash back. You’ll earn an unlimited 1% back for every dollar spent on the card, and receive another 1% back when you pay the bill.
It also comes with a 0% intro APR for 18 months on balance transfers. After that, the variable APR will be 17.74% - 27.74% variable. There’s an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of each transfer ($5 minimum) completed within the first 4 months of account opening. After that, 5% of each transfer ($5 minimum).
